Author talks and school visits return to Angus as part of Book Week Scotland 2021

Book Week Scotland is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place across the country and is organised by the Scottish Book Trust. It aims to bring people of all ages and all walks of life together to share the joy of reading.

ANGUSalive Libraries have a number of events taking place over the week, including talks by well-known authors Andrew Murray Scott, Jess Smith, Kirsten McKenzie and Chris Longmuir. The authors will be sharing information about the inspiration for their titles as well as providing a limited number of signed copies to purchase.

The ANGUSalive Libraries Team will also be visiting schools in Angus to promote the library service, engaging children in reading and delivering Bookbug family bags to Primary 1 as well as the Read, Write and Count bags to Primary 2 and 3 children. The bags are full of books and resources to help inspire children, parents, guardians and carers to develop a love of reading.

Lesley Matthews, Libraries Operations Lead explains more about the activities during Book Week Scotland: She said: “We organise activities every year to mark Book Week Scotland and it’s great that we are once again able to host author talks on-site as part of the celebrations following a period when we were unable to due to Covid restrictions.

“We’re thrilled to be welcoming these well-known authors to our libraries where we will hear more about them as individuals as well as the inspiration and journeys they took to write some fantastic books. We hope that our activities will not only attract people of all ages to come together and share the joy of reading, but also that some people find a new joy through books and the transformative power of reading.”

Angus libraries have been visiting schools for a number of years but was halted during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Sylvia Main, Children and Families Libraries Lead added: “We’re delighted to be able to go back out and visit children in schools once again. It’s essential that children, parents and guardians hear about the library service and the resources and activities they provide. The Covid pandemic will have had an impact on literacy in children and adults therefore the return of our school visits is really important to help raise awareness of the fun that can be had through reading but also the huge benefits it has to learning.”
